Tillis YET AGAIN Votes to Support $80 Million Raid on NC Military Bases

Raleigh – North Carolina Democratic Party spokesman Robert Howard released the follow statement after Senator Tillis voted for a third time to allow the Trump administration to raid $80 million from North Carolina’s military bases:

“North Carolina deserves an independent senator who will put what’s best for our state before what’s best for them. Unfortunately, Senator Tillis is so scared of the president and his Republican primary challenger that he keeps voting against what’s best for North Carolina’s military communities. Senator Tillis is a cowardly, weak-kneed Washington politician who meekly puts his own political survival ahead of what’s best for our state, even if North Carolina military families will have to pay the price for it.”

Senator Tillis’ flip flop on the emergency declaration, which came after he wrote a Washington Post op-ed he later walked back, is “one of the senator’s weakest moments.” His votes enable an $80 million raid on North Carolina’s military bases, despite the Pentagon warning of “dire outcomes” for bases like Camp Lejeune, which is facing “substandard” facilities and “compromised readiness.”

It also has fueled scathing criticisms, with editorials writing he “did not stand up to Trump for state’s military funding” and voters asking him “How can we trust you to fix it if you’re taking money from us actively for a border wall?” And it earned Tillis a self-funding primary challenger who is forcing the senator to spend half of his campaign cash on ads “designed to blunt criticism from within his own party.”
