As the GOP primary infighting escalates in the North Carolina Senate race, reporting from the Los Angeles Times details a memo from Republican pollster Paul Shumaker — former Governor Pat McCrory’s top political adviser — that “raised doubts…about the value of a Trump endorsement.” The memo included polling that “found that North Carolina voters were more likely — by a 10-percentage point margin — to support a Biden-endorsed candidate than one backed by Trump.” Of course, this is the same Pat McCrory who said in April that “he’d welcome Trump’s endorsement and would support him again if he were the 2024 GOP presidential nominee.”

Since former President Trump upended the GOP primary with his surprise endorsement of Congressman Ted Budd and “adding a slap” at McCrory’s campaign record, the Republican rivals  have been in all-out brawl over each other’s viability in a general election matchup, even dragging Senators Richard Burr and Thom Tillis into the fray. 

“With Pat McCrory’s pollster and top political adviser now warning that Trump’s endorsement  falls flat with North Carolina voters, this fractured GOP field is sure to spiral into even more infighting,” said NCDP spokeswoman Kate Frauenfelder. “These politicians are focused on landing blows on their opponents and tearing each other down to gain any advantage they can in this primary, and North Carolina voters will reject their desperation in the general election.”
