As Trump Admits He Tried to “Play It Down,” Tillis Applauded Trump’s Handling of the Coronavirus “Every Step of the Way”

Trump: “I wanted to always play it down… I still like playing it down, because I don’t want to create a panic.”

Tillis: “The President has fixed the problems every step of the way. And I think at the end of the day the voters are going to recognize he’s put the full force of the US government behind combating COVID…”

In explosive new audio from CNN and reporter Bob Woodward, President Trump admitted that he purposefully downplayed the threat of coronavirus, saying, “I wanted to always play it down. I still like playing it down, because I don’t want to create a panic.”

Yet while Trump was “playing it down,” Tillis was applauding the President’s bungled coronavirus response every step of the way. Less than two weeks ago, Senator Tillis told Fox News: “The President has fixed the problems every step of the way. And I think at the end of the day the voters are going to recognize he’s put the full force of the US government behind combating COVID, and I believe he’s working in a very challenging circumstance.”

Tillis has long been a rubber stamp for President Trump’s mishandling of the coronavirus. Tillis praised Trump and said he “displayed decisive leadership.” He’s also said, “I think the President’s taking every step he can to help the health and safety of the people of the United States.

Meanwhile, North Carolina on Monday recorded another 1,000 cases of the virus. In total, North Carolina has now exceeded 177,000 cases while the state’s death toll approaches 3,000.

“Senator Thom Tillis has been a partisan rubber stamp for President Trump’s bungled coronavirus response from day one, saying the President is marshalling every resource while in reality the President knew about the serious dangers of the coronavirus but chose to play it down,” NCDP spokesperson Robert Howard said. “North Carolina families are still dealing with this virus because of the administration’s mismanagement of the pandemic and because Senators like Thom Tillis are too weak to stand up and do the right thing.”
