WHAT THEY’RE SAYING: NC Democrats Praise Biden’s Build Back Better Framework

Last week, President Biden announced a framework for the Build Back Better Act. The transformational package will make historic investments in child care, home care, climate change mitigation, affordable housing, education, and health care. In its entirety, the legislation will bring down costs, rebuild the backbone of our country, and create an economy where everyone has a fair shot.

North Carolina Democrats from the federal to the local level are fired up about the Build Back Better framework’s impact on the Tar Heel State. In North Carolina, the Build Back Better Act will provide access to child care for 629,956 young children, fund universal, high-quality, free preschool for 154,103 children, make the largest effort to combat climate change in American history, expand health care coverage for 388,000 uninsured people, including the 212,000 who fell into the Medicaid coverage gap, lower costs health care costs for 229,100 people who will on average save hundreds of dollars per year, and much more.

See below for more from NC Democrats’ support of the Build Back Better framework:

Governor Roy Cooper:

“High-quality early childhood education is critical to building a stronger, more equitable state and helping more parents return to the workforce to grow our economy. These stabilization grants coupled with the President’s Build Back Better agenda make it possible for North Carolina families to get the child care help they need to succeed.”

Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12):

“I rise this evening to speak about the importance of passing the Build Back Better Act. This legislation will be nothing short of transformational for Black America. It extends the Child Tax Credit for a year, cutting child poverty in half. In North Carolina, that’s a lifeline for hundreds of thousands of children who go to bed hungry every night. It puts $150 billion dollars towards affordable housing, which has been described as the ‘single largest and most comprehensive investment in affordable housing in history.’”

Congressman G. K. Butterfield (NC-01):

“The Build Back Better Act is bold legislation that will revitalize our economy, lower costs for American families, and combat the worsening climate crisis.”

Congresswoman Kathy Manning (NC-06):

“Democrats are preparing to move forward with the Build Back Better Act — a transformative bill that invests in universal pre-K for three and four year-olds, extends the Child Tax Credit, and reduces the cost of child care and elder care. The bill also expands Medicaid in non-expansion states like North Carolina, increases Pell Grants, and adopts critical measures to combat climate change. All these life-changing policies will be fully paid for and nobody earning less than $400,000 a year will pay a penny more in taxes. This is our opportunity to build back stronger and more equitably than before. I look forward to passing this bill to expand opportunities for North Carolina families.”

Congressman David Price (NC-04):

Congresswoman Deborah Ross (NC-02):

“This package represents a historic investment in the next generation and will transform the lives of working Americans. By enacting the President’s Build Back Better agenda, we can bolster America’s families through investments in universal Pre-K, affordable and quality childcare, as well as an extension of the Child Tax Credit. This package will also provide one of the largest investments ever in combatting the climate crisis and help to close the Medicaid gap in states like North Carolina. We must rise to meet this pivotal moment and pass this historic bill for the American people.”
