Statement on the Passing of Former Rep. Melanie Wade Goodwin

Raleigh – NCDP Executive Director Meredith Cuomo released the following statement:

“Today, North Carolina Democrats across our state mourn the loss of former Representative and longtime public servant Melanie Wade Goodwin, who passed away last night after a lengthy battle with cancer.

“Melanie was the essence of a fighter, never backing down and always standing up for what she knew to be right. As a legislator, that meant fighting for North Carolina’s public schools, working to expand access to affordable health insurance and protecting women’s reproductive rights. Her service to our state extended well beyond her time in the General Assembly, including her most recent position serving as Chief Deputy Commissioner of the North Carolina Industrial Commission even as she continued her treatment earlier this summer.

“As the better half of our Party’s Chairman, Wayne Goodwin, for 22 years, Melanie was also a beloved and essential member of our NCDP family, and we will miss her passion, her grit and her love for North Carolina.

“Today, I hope North Carolinians of all backgrounds and political beliefs will pause for a moment to recognize Melanie’s many contributions to, and sacrifices for, our state. Our hearts are with Wayne, Madison and Jackson as we all mourn together in this difficult moment.”
