Registration Repair

Over 100,000 North Carolina voters are on the North Carolina State Board of Elections’ Registration Repair List, meaning they need to repair an issue with their voter registration or else they risk having to vote provisionally in the upcoming election. Many folks on the list don’t know that they’re on it—most because their registrations were impacted by record-keeping errors that were no fault of their own.

Here’s what to know:

  • The Registration Repair List is different than the Griffin List. There’s significant overlap, but the Repair List is about 40,000 names longer. You can be on one and not the other.
  • Provisional ballots are way more likely to be challenged by election officials than regular ballots, so we don’t want anyone stuck voting provisionally when they could be voting regularly. In 2020, only 1 in every 3 provisional ballots was counted.
  • You need to update your voter registration before voting. That means—if you’re on the list—you can’t repair your registration by re-registering at one-stop early voting.
  • Black voters are 3x as likely to be on the list as white voters. This list unfairly and unequally targets some of our neighbors more than others.

Early Voting

Yes, early voting has started: for primary elections in select communities. Don’t get confused! Go to the Upcoming Election page on the NCSBE website to see the election calendar in full so you know when your town goes to the polls.

North Carolina has one-stop early voting, so new voters can register to vote and cast their ballot at the same location on the same day, without having to worry if they’ve missed a deadline.

For more information about early voting and a quick link to the early voting site look-up tool, go to ncdp.org/vote-early. You can also vote early at your county Board of Elections, which you can find easily by going to ncdp.org/boe.
