NCDP Statement on 51st Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots

NCDP Chairman Wayne Goodwin, LGBTQ Democrats of North Carolina Auxiliary President Ginger Walker, and NCDP Transgender Caucus Chair Janice Covington issued the following statement on the 51st anniversary of the New York City Stonewall Riots and the beginning of national pride celebrations:

“The anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, started by two Black and Brown Transgender Women, Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, serves as a reminder of the struggles that the LGBTQ+ community has faced, especially Black and Brown Transgender Americans, in the fight for equal rights in our country. While we have made great strides through the recognition of marriage equality, the passage of anti-discrimination measures and the recent SCOTUS Title VII Ruling, we know there is much work still to be done.”

“As we continue to fight for equal rights for all members of the LGBTQ+ community, we recognize this important turning point in our nation’s history and pay tribute to the brave leaders who have helped pave the way.”
