As Vice President Joe Biden released his agenda to empower Latino Americans, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic is highlighting Donald Trump’s failures for North Carolina’s Latino community.

According to the state Department of Health and Human Services, Latinos currently account for 55 percent of Mecklenburg County’s coronavirus cases even though they make up just 14 percent of the county population. In Durham County, which has seen over 5,200 cases so far, Latinos make up 60 percent of all infections.

In June, Latinos accounted for 44 percent of all confirmed coronavirus cases in North Carolina, a dramatically disproportionate figure. When asked about the U.S. coronavirus death toll in an interview with Axios last night, Donald Trump said, “It is what it is.”

NCDP Communications Director Austin Cook released the following statement:

“North Carolina’s Latino community continues to bear the brunt of Donald Trump’s failures when it comes to the pandemic. Disproportionately impacted by the health consequences and largely shut out of recovery efforts like the Paycheck Protection Program, Latinos here have been completely left behind by this administration. While Trump’s rhetoric fans the flames of racism, Vice President Biden is offering a plan that will empower Latino communities and root out  the racial disparities in health, education and economic opportunity that continue to hold Latinos back.”
