Five Days Five Ways: American Rescue Plan’s $1400 Stimulus Checks Put More Money In The Pockets Of Those Who Need It Most

Democrats are delivering on their promise to help the people of North Carolina through the COVID-19 crisis with a historic COVID relief package, while every single Republican stood in the way. This week, as President Biden’s American Rescue Plan is the law of the land, we’ll be highlighting the ways it will invest in North Carolinians who need it most and help the state recover from the COVID-19 crisis — starting with stimulus checks.

President Biden signed the American Rescue Plan on Thursday and North Carolinians have already begun to see the $1400 stimulus checks hit their bank account. The plan provides economic impact payments of up to $1,400 per person for more than 6,582,400 adults and 2,693,100 children across North Carolina. That is 89 percent of all adults in the state and 89 percent of all children in the state.

“Far too often throughout this pandemic, North Carolinians have had to choose between putting food on the table or paying their rent,” said NCDP Chair Bobbie Richardson. “These stimulus checks provide an immediate boost to people’s pocketbooks and provide the urgent relief that they need to get through, no thanks to North Carolina Republicans who opposed it.”

The coupled crises of the pandemic and the economic instability have wreaked havoc on North Carolinians. The American Rescue Plan takes action where it was clearly needed. In North Carolina, 783,000 adults report not having enough food to eat. That’s 17 percent of all adults living with children, who report that the children in their household do not have enough to eat. An estimated 2,644,000 adults or 35 percent of all adults statewide report having difficulty covering normal household expenses.
