Flip The Script, Capitol Chaos, The Cost of War
Here’s what were covering this week!đ
Flipping the Script
Around 200,000 more Democrats voted in the Senate primary than Republicans did. For reference, in 2022, Republicans out-voted Democrats by over 140,000. Weâre building momentum and enthusiasm around the most important Senate race in the country, and that turnout gives us a lot to look forward to.
Democrats spoke loud and clear at the ballot box last week to show that they want Governor Steinâs veto to mean something. Because of your organizing in the primaries, North Carolina Dems have built a stronger blue wall to fortify our governorâs veto and prevent harmful legislation from passing through the General Assembly. Democrats showed an overwhelming preference for candidates who promised to stand up for our values in Raleigh, allowing Democrats to serve as a true check on GOP power-grabs in the capital.
Democrats sent a strong slate of Democratic candidates forward to the general election, including Jamie Ager running for the 11th congressional districtâa DCCC target race where weâre going to push hard for a red-to-blue flip to defeat Chuck Edwards.
Chaos at the Capitol
Governor Steinâs Critical Needs Budget takes common sense steps to address some of the largest problems caused by Republicans inability to pass a budget like ensuring access to health care, investing in quality education for our children, and keeping people safe. North Carolina teachers and law enforcement officers are some of the most underpaid in the country, leading to chronic vacancies and a backlog of staffing problems. Political infighting has prevented North Carolina from filling budget gaps and harmed our stateâs ability to recruit and retain public safety officials and teachers.
Governorâs Steins budget addresses all of those needsâand whatever the Republicans come up with will not.
The Republican-majority General Assembly has still failed to pass a budget that is now over 200 days overdue. Because of their inaction, Medicaid was left underfunded threatening its future. Enacting the Governorâs budget request will secure Medicaidâs future and ensure that the millions of North Carolinians that rely on Medicaid donât have their care put at risk.
The Cost of War
Every major poll since the initial air strikes has shown that Americans disapprove of Trumpâs war in Iran. Trump ran as a pro-peace, America First candidate, yet now heâs openly admitting that his war with Iran doesnât have an end date and could ultimately change little.
Stocks are plunging, oil prices have spiked to over $100, and according to AAA, the average price for a gallon of gasoline has risen to $3.48 nationwide â a nearly 17% increase since the first strikes on Iran on Feb. 28. The cost of the first week of Trumpâs war in Iran is an estimated $6 billion â enough to cover a full year of health care for 660,000 Medicaid enrollees.
Democrats are demanding answers from Donald Trump as to why he launched the largest military operation since the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Last week, Democrats in the Senate and House voted on War Powers Resolutions to put Republicans on record supporting this reckless war.
Ready to Vote
This April, weâre knocking doors to connect with voters who may need to take action now to ensure they can cast a regular ballot in Novemberâs election. The people we’re talking to will include voters who have received letters from the NC Board of Elections about their voter registration, among others.
First, join us for our Zoom launch on March 31 to learn more about the North Carolina Democratic Partyâs “Ready to Vote” initiative. Weâll walk through why this work matters, who weâll be reaching, and how you can help make sure every voter is prepared and empowered to vote successfully this fall.
