Lately, it feels like keeping a roof over your head in North Carolina requires a small miracle. Between rent hikes, sky-high interest rates, and the everyday cost of living, the math just isn’t mathing for working folks. Right now, nearly 60 percent of low-income households in our state are stretched to the breaking point just to make rent.

But if you ask the guy sitting in the Oval Office? He couldn’t care less. Last week, Donald reportedly told House Speaker Mike Johnson that “no one gives a [bleep] about housing.”

Let that sink in. 

While North Carolina families are losing sleep trying to figure out how to pay the mortgage, this administration is making it crystal clear who they aren’t fighting for. It’s no wonder Donald’s approval ratings are deeply underwater on the issues that hit our wallets:

 -17 on the economy, -18 on trade, and a dismal -24 on inflation.

While D.C. Republicans brush off your monthly bills, Democrats are actually doing the work to fix it. Senate Democrats just championed the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act—a real, practical plan to build more housing, rein in the corporate monopolies buying up our neighborhoods, and put the dream of homeownership back in reach. When it came time to actually deliver for North Carolina, our very own Republican Senators Thom Tillis and Ted Budd voted no. When given the chance to stand up to corporate landlords and lower your costs, they chose their D.C. special interests.

We deserve leaders who actually give a [bleep] about whether we can afford to live in our own state, instead of politicians who just leave us footing the bill.

Sixteen Years

Sixteen years ago we made a simple promise: getting sick shouldn’t mean going broke. Instead of building on that progress, Donald and D.C. Republicans are celebrating this anniversary by taking a sledgehammer to our healthcare. Congress has flat-out refused to extend ACA tax credits, premiums just skyrocketed for 22 million Americans—including over 900,000 folks right here in North Carolina. 

The math is brutal. We’ve seen a staggering 22 percent drop in signups in our state, the worst hit in the entire country. They also just slashed $911 billion from Medicaid. Conveniently delaying the worst of those cuts until after the November 2026 elections. They fully expect 16 million Americans to lose their health coverage, but crossing their fingers that you won’t notice until after you’ve already cast your ballot.

This isn’t just D.C. math—it’s hitting our neighbors hard. Hear from just two North Carolinians that have been affected:

“My husband and I expect our health insurance premiums to skyrocket and before long, all our rural hospitals to close, because thousands of our fellow citizens are losing Affordable Care Act insurance along with Medicaid. All this Republican sadistic cruelty to give the obscenely rich more tax breaks instead of making them pay a fair share of Social Security and income taxes.” – Mary Jane from Waynesville, NC

“How are my fellow Medicaid patients in my nursing home going to find doctors who will take this Medicaid cut now? And my brother is totally disabled and now his Medicaid healthcare will be under this federal cap on Medicaid with this additional NC cut to Medicaid is TERRIBLE!” – Janet from Asheville

While the current administration actively trades our health for special interest handouts, North Carolina Democrats are going to keep fighting for your care, your wallet, and your peace of mind.

Whatley’s Worst Kept Secret

Y’all, as adults, and as a community, our number one job is keeping our kids safe. We teach them about stranger danger from day one. But apparently, D.C. insider Michael Whatley prefers giving those same predators a seat at the leadership table.

A stomach-turning new report reveals that as NCGOP Chair, Whatley actively “championed the rise to power” of Harvey Lee West, a convicted child sex predator.

Most folks would want a man like that far away from our families. Instead, Whatley used his power to hand-pick West for prominent executive committees. 

Even his own party is disgusted, calling Whatley’s ties to West “the worst kept secret in the Republican Party.” When asked to explain himself? Total silence.

North Carolina needs a Senator who actually looks out for our families—not one who protects predators.
