North Carolina Democratic Party Chair Anderson Clayton released the following statement on the fifth anniversary of the deadly Capitol insurrection:
“Five years ago, the Republican Party spread lies and peddled conspiracies that our free and fair elections were fraudulent, inciting an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol that resulted in multiple deaths, including the death of law enforcement officers – Don Brown, Michele Morrow, and Michael Whatley all helped spread these lies. From Morrow attending the rally that led to the insurrection, to Whatley being named the ‘stop the steal guy,’ to Brown defending people charged with crimes for storming the Capitol, these candidates are a threat to our democracy and are far too extreme to represent North Carolina in the U.S. Senate.”
The GOP field for U.S. Senate spread election conspiracy theories and contributed to the incitement of the January 6th insurrection:
- Don Brown has “tout[ed] his experience defending people” charged with crimes for the January 6th insurrection and “[stood] by Trump’s Big Lie that the 2020 election was rigged.” Brown also touted the endorsement of election denier Sidney Powell, Trump’s ex-lawyer who spearheaded efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
- Michele Morrow livestreamed “after attending the January 6 riot at the US Capitol” that led to the insurrection and the death of multiple law enforcement officers.
- Whatley is an election denier who baselessly claimed there was “massive fraud” in the 2020 election, was called the “stop the steal guy” and stood by Trump after the January 6th insurrection.
