Tillis Still Has Not Spoken Out Against DeJoy’s Illegal Straw Donor Scheme

It’s been three days since the Washington Post’s bombshell investigation revealed that Senator Tillis was “one of the biggest beneficiaries” of an apparent illegal straw donor scheme orchestrated by USPS chief Louis DeJoy, yet Senator Tillis still has not spoken out against the scheme and his wealthy mega-donor or said what he plans on doing with donations he received illegally.

Thus far, Senator Tillis has only denied knowing about the scheme. But now that it’s been revealed, Senator Tillis must denounce the allegedly illegal scheme and USPS Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and return the donations he received illegally.

North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein this morning laid out how this scheme, as reported by the Washington Post, is a felony and warrants an investigation. Additional in-state reporting again showed how Senator Tillis benefited from DeJoy’s illegal scheme, noting how on one day in October 2014, “20 mid-level and senior officials at the company donated a total of $37,600 to the campaign of Sen. Thom Tillis.”

Analysts have called on Tillis to return the money he received illegally, yet he refuses to say where he stands.

“Will Senator Tillis denounce his wealthy mega-donor and his unlawful straw donor scheme and return the contributions he received illegally, or will he continue to be silent?” NCDP spokesperson Robert Howard said. “Senator Tillis’ refusal to speak out on an issue this serious shows that he’s bought and paid for by wealthy special interests, and puts his allegiance with them, not the people of North Carolina.”
