NEW: GOP County Commissioner Tells Trump to Wear a Mask in NC. Does He Care Enough About North Carolinians to Do It?

Ahead of Trump’s visit to Winston-Salem on Tuesday, the local Republican County Commissioner says the president “needs to” wear a mask at his rally

Raleigh – In a new article for the Winston-Salem Journal, Republican Forsyth County Commissioner Dave Plyler called on Donald Trump to wear a mask during his campaign rally tomorrow:

“It’s been ordered by the governor. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. When in North Carolina, do as the governor says … there is no excuse. [Trump] just needs to do it.”
— Dave Plyler (GOP), Forsyth County Commission Chair

Governor Roy Cooper’s public health guidance says that in Phase 2.5, which North Carolina entered on Friday, outdoor public gatherings should include no more than 50 people. But the Trump campaign has not said whether it will abide by social distancing guidelines, require masks or cap attendance at the event — which it has not done at recent in-person events.

Meanwhile, North Carolina has surpassed 178,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus this weekend and has recorded more than 2,900 deaths.

NCDP Communications Director Austin Cook released the following statement:

“To hold this kind of event is flagrantly ignoring the guidance of Trump’s own CDC as well as Governor Cooper’s executive order aimed at protecting public health. Trump has never taken the threat of the pandemic seriously, which is why it has spiraled into such a devastating public health and economic crisis. Now local Republicans are even calling on Donald Trump to wear a mask at his rally in Winston-Salem — does he care enough about North Carolinians’ safety to do it?”
