NCDP Statement on Rep. Murphy’s Racist Tweet

This weekend, Representative Greg Murphy tweeted and then deleted a racist statement, in which he invoked 9/11 to insult Rep. Ilhan Omar after she offered her condolences to Capitol Police in the wake of the death of an officer. North Carolina Democratic Party Chair Bobbie Richardson has released the following statement:

“Our state deserves better from their elected officials, no matter how fiercely they may disagree with others on policy. Invoking 9/11 to insult a Muslim member of Congress is beyond insensitive — it is racist, dangerous, and perpetuates hate rooted in lies. But this isn’t the first time Representative Murphy has shown us who he is. His time in elected office has been marked by encouraging hate and division on a daily basis, and the NC GOP’s silence speaks volumes. North Carolina Democrats call on the NC GOP to condemn his statement, and on Rep. Murphy to apologize immediately for his abhorrent comments. They have no place in North Carolina.”

As WITN reported: “This is not the first time the congressman has been criticized for tweets that are later deleted.” In October, Rep. Murphy tweeted a racist statement about Vice President Kamala Harris, participating in an intensified barrage of offensive comments hurled at her since she became the first woman of color, the first Black woman and the first South Asian woman nominated as Vice President.
