This afternoon, President Biden signed the American Rescue Plan, delivering on his promise to North Carolinians to provide critical COVID relief. In response, NCDP Chair Bobbie Richardson released the following statement:
“As President Biden said, help is here. The people of North Carolina have suffered unimaginable loss over the last year, losing jobs, loved ones, struggling to pay the bills, and put food on the table,” said NCDP Chair Bobbie Richardson. “But today, we can breathe a sigh of relief. With the American Rescue Plan, President Biden and North Carolina Democrats have made a historic investment in North Carolina families, delivering $1400 checks to those who need it most, providing funding to get more shots in more arms, and ensuring schools have the resources they need to return to the classrooms safely.”
The American Rescue Plan will have a profound impact on North Carolinians in the form of direct payments.
- If you make less than $75,000 (or married couples making less than $150,000) you will receive a $1400 stimulus check and another $1,400 per dependent. Families of four could receive a total of $5,600.
- The child tax credit will be expanded from $2,000 to $3,000 per child and $3,600 for children under the age of 6, benefitting 2.1 million North Carolina adults and nearly 2.5 million children, and lifting 137,000 North Carolina children out of poverty.
- North Carolinians out of work will see their unemployment benefits extended through Labor Day and raised by $300 a week, with a tax break on up to $10,200 of benefits received in 2020.
