NEW FROM WUNC: Michael Whatley Is Bankrolled By The Energy Companies He Lobbied For

WUNC: “Whatley, who spent more than 15 years lobbying in the energy sector, has turned back to it for campaign funds.”

New reporting from WUNC reveals that DC insider Michael Whatley’s campaign is being bankrolled by energy companies, financially benefitting from the massive corporations he spent “more than 15 years lobbying” for.

WUNC: In North Carolina’s U.S. Senate GOP primary, contenders try to topple Trump-endorsed candidate

“Whatley, who spent more than 15 years lobbying in the energy sector, has turned back to it for campaign funds.

“One of the largest donations to any of his affiliated committees — a total of $250,000 to the Whatley Victory Committee — came from Nathan Ough, the president and CEO of Voltagrid, a Texas-based company that is marketing mobile, natural gas-powered microgrids

“The PAC raised at least another $150,000 from employees of energy companies, including $7,000 from ConocoPhillips CEO Ryan Lance and $3,500 from Marathon CEO Maryann Mannen.”

This comes after DC insider Whatley was caught advocating for policies that benefitted his “up to a million plus dollars” in oil investments, spiking his stocks up to $63,000 in a single weekend.

“For more than 15 years, Michael Whatley got rich as an oil and gas lobbyist, and now those companies are trying to install him into the Senate to continue doing their bidding,” said NCDP spokesperson Mallory Payne. “It’s clear that Whatley is only out for himself.”
