Healthcare Costs, Return to Raleigh, Fighting for Farmers

Our Digital Messages This Week 👇

Healthcare Costs 🚨

Republicans didn’t just shut down the government — they shut out working families.

Nearly a million North Carolinians are opening letters they should have never received — letters showing their health insurance premiums have doubled or even tripled overnight. Families are now facing impossible choices: pay more than their mortgage for health coverage, or risk going without care altogether.

A Republican-Made Crisis:

This spike didn’t happen by accident. It’s the direct result of Washington Republicans allowing critical Affordable Care Act subsidies to expire — the same tax credits that helped millions of working families afford coverage in the first place. Without those subsidies, insurance companies are raising premiums to cover the loss. The result? Many families across North Carolina are staring down rate hikes of 100% or more, families in counties like Buncombe and Wake are already seeing bills rise from $900 to more than $2,000 a month. Meanwhile, the same Republicans who created this crisis are holding the government hostage, walking away from their duty to govern while families pay the price.

The Human Cost:

For countless North Carolinians — retirees, families with children, small business owners — these hikes mean impossible choices. Pay the mortgage or pay the hospital bill. Keep health coverage or keep the lights on. Republicans made that the new normal. As grocery and rent prices climb, these skyrocketing health care premiums are pushing families past the breaking point. This isn’t “market forces.” It’s policy failure — created by Washington Republicans, backed by Michael Whatley, and paid for by North Carolina families.

The Democratic Fight:

This crisis won’t be fixed with speeches — it’ll be fixed with votes.

While Republicans abandon working families, Democrats are fighting for affordable care, Medicaid funding, and real solutions that lower costs and expand access. In 2026, we have a chance to send Democrats like Roy Cooper to Washington to stand tall for affordable health care, for working families, and for the right to live with dignity.

Democrats are ready to deliver — but we need North Carolinians to show up at the ballot box and make their voices heard.

Return to Raleigh 🎙️

Governor Josh Stein is calling for a special session to bring lawmakers back to Raleigh and fix the Republican-made Medicaid funding crisis that’s putting health care for 3 million North Carolinians at risk and threatening the stability of rural hospitals across our state.

Republican leadership gaveled out of session without passing a full budget — leaving teachers, law enforcement, and Medicaid recipients behind. More than 130 days into the fiscal year, there’s still no budget agreement in sight. Speaker Hall has already admitted he doesn’t plan to take another vote this year.

“The only time the General Assembly works efficiently is when they’re finding new ways to rip away power from the people,” said NCDP spokesperson Dawson McNamara-Bloom.

The legislature’s failure means Medicaid is short $319 million, threatening care for families across the state. Instead of staying to fix it, Republicans walked away — again.

NCDP Chair Anderson Clayton praised Stein’s call for a special session, saying he’s “doing what Republicans won’t — standing up for the people of North Carolina.”

While Republicans refuse to lead, Democrats are fighting to fully fund Medicaid, protect affordable care, and keep our communities healthy. Because North Carolinians deserve a government that works — not one that clocks out early.

Fighting for Farmers đź’Ş

North Carolina’s farmers are being squeezed from every side — paying more to grow, sell, and ship their crops while earning less for what they produce. All thanks to reckless tariffs that Michael Whatley “wholeheartedly” supports.

Roy Cooper sat down with farmers feeling the brunt of Washington’s chaos, calling out the trade policies that have driven up costs and crippled North Carolina’s agriculture industry. Fertilizer, fuel, and equipment prices have skyrocketed, while international markets have shut down in retaliation.

Farmers all across the state are feeling the impact. One Wilson County farmer said his corn storage boxes alone cost $68,000 more this year because of tariffs on China. Others have lost millions in revenue as exports dry up. Meanwhile, Michael Whatley continues to back these failed policies — doubling down on the same approach that gutted rural communities and sent costs soaring for working families.

Roy Cooper knows better. He grew up on a North Carolina farm — and he knows our farmers deserve fairness, not chaos.
In 2026, we must fight for our farmers by sending Roy Cooper to Washington — to stand tall, rebuild what Washington broke, and restore a bright future for North Carolina’s farmers.
