Don’t Get Duked, Unity, Thank A Republican

Here’s what were covering this week!👇

Don’t Get Duked

Republicans backed Senate Bill 266 — a bill that made it easier for Duke Energy to raise your rates and pass costs straight to you. Now, with families across North Carolina feeling it in their wallets, they’re back with HB 1192 calling it “accountability.”

Don’t fall for it.

Under this new bill, you still eat 80% of cost overruns. Duke still sets the forecasts. While they’re walking back some of 266 don’t be fooled, the same rigged system is still in place. The only thing that changed is the press release in an election year.

This is what happens when utility lobbyists have more access to the legislature than the families paying the bills. Republicans had a chance to fix a broken system. They didn’t. They made it worse and they removed the guardrails.

Keep this in mind when you step into the voting booth this November, until the system stops being built around what’s good for Duke Energy and starts being built around what’s good for you, nothing changes.

Trump Dump

It’s been more than 90 days since Trump launched a senseless war with Iran and it has everyone feeling the pain at the pump.  Trump and his administration officials have repeatedly claimed that gas prices will come down, and his Energy Secretary Chris Wright even said “there’s a very good chance” that gas will be back under $3 a gallon by summer. But right now everyone is feeling the pain at the pump, and it’s hard to believe anything coming out of the White House. The average U.S. household has spent an additional $450 on rising energy costs due to Trump’s war with Iran — nearly $60 billion in total extra costs. The extra $450 Americans are spending on gas has now wiped out any additional earnings they may have received in tax refunds this year.   For some those refunds could’ve meant the difference in how families eat, pay for housing and eliminate debt.

How Democrats are fighting back:

Senate Democrats have announced a coordinated initiative to force Republicans to vote on their stance regarding Trump’s $1.8 billion slush fund for January 6th rioters, emphasizing accountability to taxpayers. In addition, three Democratic senators have introduced a bill aimed at preventing taxpayer dollars from being allocated to Trump and his allies, including former rioters.

While Trump continues to pursue funding for personal vanity projects, including $5 million to gold-coat horses near the Lincoln Memorial and $1 billion for a White House ballroom, Democrats are actively opposing these initiatives. The renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has alone exceeded initial cost estimates by nearly $1 million.

This is what Trump does, break promises to cut costs and waste taxpayer money.

But we will not stand for this. Just know your Democrats remain committed to standing with the majority of Americans who oppose Trump’s projects and will hold Republicans accountable this midterm election.

Hurricane Season

June 1st marked the beginning of hurricane season, and it’s crucial for families across North Carolina to be prepared.

In recent years, our state has faced significant challenges from hurricanes. We will never forget the impact Hurricane Helene caused western North Carolina on September 27, 2024.  The catastrophic flooding and strong winds devastated the western Appalachian region, caused at least 107 reported deaths and major destruction of infrastructure and residential areas. Even today residents still deal with prolonged recovery impacting families, small businesses, and schools. The following year, Tropical Storm Chantel brought further devastation to central North Carolina, endangering lives and causing hundreds of millions of dollars in damages.

While North Carolinians have shown remarkable resilience in recovering from such storms, we recognize that the road ahead should not be this difficult. Cuts to funding for the National Weather Service have hindered our ability to effectively prepare for these natural disasters, and delays in FEMA funding have made recovery efforts more challenging. Thankfully, our governor and other state leaders have been aggressively fighting to ensure we get the federal resources we need to properly rebuild western North Carolina.

This hurricane season, let’s commit not only to emergency preparedness but also to holding our leaders accountable. It is essential that we advocate for the resources our communities need to rebuild and thrive after each storm. Make sure your family and friends are prepared before the next storm hits. Together, we can ensure that North Carolina is equipped to face the challenges ahead.
