Republicans’ Plan Could Raise North Carolina Seniors’ Medical Bills

The Republican plan could sunset Medicare for over two million North Carolinians after 5 years

If Republicans get their way and take power this November, the results could be disastrous for the over two million North Carolina seniors who rely on Medicare. Under the Republican plan, all federal legislation – including Medicare – would sunset after 5 years. This means that North Carolina seniors could potentially be on the hook for their own insurance and medical costs, when Medicare currently makes over $12 billion in payments for North Carolina recipients each year. That’s more than $9,000 per enrollee in North Carolina.

“So many North Carolina seniors have been paying into Medicare for decades and rely on the affordable care it provides – the last thing they need is Republicans leaving them on the hook for thousands in health care costs. While Republicans’ only plan could sunset Medicare and raise health care costs, North Carolina Democrats are doing everything they can to protect seniors’ Medicare and lower health care costs for everyone,” said NCDP Spokesperson Ellie Dougherty

While Republicans are threatening seniors’ hard earned benefits, like Medicare and Social Security, President Biden and Democrats have proposed lowered health care costs, and pushed for measures to bolster Social Security and responsibly reduce the deficit without touching Medicare or Social Security by making billionaires pay their fair share in taxes – while also lowering costs for working families.
