McCrory’s Corruption Problem Grows As Group Finds New Evidence Of Apparent “Straw Donor” Scheme

Last year, a bombshell report revealed an apparent straw donor scheme orchestrated by U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, a GOP mega-donor from Greensboro. WXII is now reporting that nonpartisan campaign finance watchdog Common Cause NC has found new evidence that DeJoy employees were engaged in a similarly “suspicious pattern of campaign donations” to Pat McCrory’s gubernatorial campaigns in 2012 and 2016. DeJoy, his family, and his employees donated $300,000 to McCrory’s political campaigns.

Common Cause reports that DeJoy’s employees, “who had never really given campaign contributions prior to the 2012 election, and then on two days — they all did.” In 2013, then-Governor McCrory rewarded his wealthy donors by appointing DeJoy’s wife to serve as North Carolina DHHS Secretary.

“Failed politician Pat McCrory tries to claim outsider status, but he’s been on the inside of political corruption for years and his ethical problems are growing by the minute,” said NCDP spokeswoman Kate Frauenfelder. “This new evidence of an apparent straw donor scheme is the latest proof that Pat McCrory is bought and paid for by his ultra-wealthy donors instead of standing up for North Carolina.”
