GOP Legislative Candidates Celebrate Draft SCOTUS Opinion, Write “Legislation Similar To the Texas Abortion Ban”

Raleigh, NC – Since Monday night, North Carolinians across the state have gathered and marched in protest of the draft SCOTUS opinion which would overturn Roe v. Wade and jeopardize safe, legal abortion. While Democrats and advocates have doubled down to protect the right to choose, Republican candidates and leaders have made it clear they will not rest until they strip people from the ability to control their own bodies, lives, and futures.

Republican candidates for the North Carolina Legislature are taking cues from their leader, Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson who released a statement “calling on the General Assembly to act” saying “if the Supreme Court hands the power back to the states, it will be our duty to protect the life of the unborn.”

Republican Rep. Keith Kidwell heard Robinson loud and clear and said he is “drafting legislation similar to the Texas abortion ban.”

Yet, abortion is legal in North Carolina and will remain legal as long as Governor Cooper and Legislative Democrats work together to block Republicans’ unrelenting radical war on health care and the right to choose.

See what other Republican Legislators and Candidates are saying:

Senate Leader Phil Berger declined to comment

Speaker Tim Moore’s Office: “The Speaker is unequivocally pro-life and has led a pro-life majority in the NC General Assembly for 6 years. However, it is premature to comment until a decision is actually issued by the Court. In the meantime, it is important to note that the leak released yesterday is an unprecedented and egregious breach of decorum within our nation’s highest court,”

Amy Galey SD-24: “I am committed to continuing to fight for our unborn children.”

Larry Coleman SD-22: “The N.C. General Assembly should enact legislation that allows abortions only (in) cases of medical necessity.”

John Tarantino SD-22: “Repurpose tax dollars wasted upon funding Planned Parenthood targeting young women of color and use it to provide ultrasound services to help educate young women who are in distress.”

Matt Ansley SD-10: “I want to see this state ban abortions in NC. I do not want to see NC become an abortion hub like has occurred in Oklahoma. I am pro-life & a Christian and believe life begins at conception.”

Brian Hawley HD-53: “The sanctity of life must be preserved. How far are humans willing to go to deny a baby their God-given right to life? I will continue to fight for the unborn and defend their most sacred right to life.”

Joyce Krawiec SD-31: “I don’t have a lot of faith that we can override anything (now),” said Republican Sen. Joyce Krawiec, who led the charge on numerous abortion restriction bills in recent years. “So it would depend on what happens after the next election.” “We’re not getting any cooperation from Democrats on overriding,” Krawiec said.
