Whatley’s FEMA Flip-Flop
New reporting from The Assembly caught Whatley saying he’d like to abolish FEMA, and that he wrote it into the FEMA Review Council’s final report. Two weeks earlier, as co-chair of that same council, he released a report that says the opposite.
Pick a lane, Michael.
It fits the pattern. Eighteen months in as a failed “recovery czar,” Whatley has landed WNC only about 15 percent of the federal support it needs. People on the ground blame him for the delays, and nearly 200 are now calling for him to step down. Meanwhile he’s also been caught lying about cutting red tape and inflating progress on roads and bridges in the disaster zone.
Even his own party is done covering for him. Budd, Tillis, and Hudson all opposed the $88 billion supplemental because it has zero Helene money in it. Zero.
Western North Carolina needed recovery, instead they got a guy who can’t stop failing them.
Sarah Steven’s Dirty Money
Sarah Stevens’ second quarter fundraising numbers were just released, and they are abysmal. She is running for Supreme Court to extend her career of protecting the powerful, including sexual predators like Harvey West. Despite public outcry, she stubbornly refuses to give up the major donation she raised from him and has even gone so far as to lie and say she didn’t know him, despite proof showing otherwise.
Now we know why she’s clinging to his money; she cannot afford to run a campaign without support from sexual predators and powerful political insiders. As Justice Earls continues to earn the support of working people and families across North Carolina, Sarah Stevens’ only hope is that the big money special interests whom she has always fought for in the General Assembly bail her out.
Piggy Bank Presidency
While your grocery bill keeps climbing, Donald and Republicans are laughing all the way to the bank. 95% of U.S. adults say we’re in an affordability crisis, and Republicans’ response is to mock you for noticing.
Americans are also eating nearly 90% of the cost of Donald’s tariff tantrums. Every tantrum, every self-inflicted price spike, that’s not coming out of another country’s pocket. It’s coming out of yours.
While we scrape by, Donald is treating the presidency like his personal piggy bank. His own financial disclosures show more than 21,000 financial transactions in 2025, over $1.4 billion in crypto income, and more than $370,000 in freebies, including Super Bowl tickets, UFC ringside seats, the World Cup, and the U.S. Open.
It’s clear Republicans have no plan to bring costs down and Donald’s too busy cashing in to care.
NEW FROM MS NOW: NCDP Chair Anderson Clayton discusses the fight to keep early voting sites on college campuses.
NCDP Chair Anderson Clayton joined MS NOW alongside Bishop William Barber to discuss the ongoing efforts to protect voting rights and ensure election integrity across the state. The segment, which reached an audience of more than 1 million viewers, highlighted the critical stakes for North Carolinians in the upcoming election cycle as the GOP continues to remove on-campus voting sites from colleges and eliminate Sunday early voting hours.
On Tuesday, the Guilford County Board of Elections declined to adopt the 2026 early voting sites at N.C. A&T and UNC Greensboro where students pushed to use early voting sites that had served the university campuses in 2024, where thousands of students cast their ballots.
Republicans are strategically targeting both student voters and Black and Brown communities across North Carolina to demoralize and disenfranchise voters in these communities that currently have access to these polling locations.
Chair Clayton also detailed the Republican legislative maneuvers aimed at undermining the state’s election process:
“We are the only state in the country, Jonathan, that currently has a state auditor controlling our elections. This is because Republicans at the state legislative level chose to strip our Democratic Governor, whom voters overwhelmingly elected in 2024, of the ability to appoint State Board of Election members. They knew that when Democrats have the ability to appoint nonpartisan members, we have free and fair elections in North Carolina, and Republicans are afraid of that.”
