Michael Whatley’s Appointment Of Child Predator Harvey West “Dominated” NCGOP Convention As Party “Attempts To Cleanse”

Asheville Watchdog: “The party leadership under Whatley had detailed knowledge of West’s record yet supported West’s rise to influence.”

New reporting from the Asheville Watchdog is highlighting how Michael Whatley’s appointment of convicted child sex offender Harvey West “dominated” the NCGOP convention last weekend as the party passed a resolution banning members who are convicted felons “involving a crime of violence, sexual abuse, or child abuse” from serving in party leadership.

As Chair, Whatley repeatedly appointed child predator Harvey West to NCGOP leadership positions, despite having “detailed knowledge” about West’s criminal past and drawing outrage from his fellow Republicans.

North Carolinians deserve to know if Michael Whatley supports the NCGOP resolution and why he “killed” a past effort to restrict felons and predators’ involvement in the party.

Asheville Watchdog: The state GOP’s attempt to cleanse the party of its past ties to a convicted child-sex offender dominated debate at its 2026 convention last weekend

Tom Fiedler | June 17, 2026

  • None of West’s enablers and financial beneficiaries responded to my previous requests for comment […] They’ve remained silent in public.
  • But the stain of West’s connection to Whatley and within the state party not only remains, but is spreading and proving to be impervious to attempts to cleansing. It has become a bludgeon wielded by the Democrats against the Republican candidate, who has remained silent.
  • The most recent of these cleansing attempts dominated closed-door debate at the state GOP convention this past weekend in Greensboro which, as often happens after attempted coverups, may have spread the stain like a contagion affecting others in high places.
  • In 1998 when West was a 28-year-old police officer in Beaufort County, he was arrested and charged with the statutory rape of three girls, two of them age 14 and the third age 16. He claimed he wasn’t guilty of statutory rape, one of the state’s most serious crimes, but pled guilty to 16 lesser charges. He spent six years in prison followed by 10 years on the state’s sex-offender registry.
  • Whatley appointed West to the powerful Plan of Organization Committee, which writes or amends the party’s bylaws. Separately, West was elected chairman of the Congressional District One committee, a post placing him in the top tier of party leadership before and during Whatley’s tenure.
  • West never hid his criminal record. Quite the opposite. He told me in a phone interview that his nearly two decades of serving in the party has demonstrated “redemption.”
  • The party leadership under Whatley had detailed knowledge of West’s record yet supported West’s rise to influence.
