Amendment: Vote Against Voter ID

The NCDP is taking the official position to vote against all statewide amendments. We told you about the “Property Tax Cap” last week, and this week we’re covering the amendment to require voter ID. 

Voter ID has a direct and disparate impact on those in the Black and brown communities. Research has found that Black voters are more likely than white voters to lack a qualifying ID. In addition, voter ID laws have been shown to be an active deterrent to voting, particularly for Black and brown voters. It’s been shown that voters without ID are either unable to vote because they arrive at the polls without an ID, or more significantly, those without ID decide to not go to the polls in the first place as a result of the law.

We’re opposed to the photo ID amendment because state law already requires identification for absentee voting and provides for voters who cannot reasonably provide ID. The proposed amendment would place the requirement that all voters present photo identification into the State Constitution without protecting those existing safeguards. We’re concerned that this could create additional barriers for military, student, rural, and older voters.

If you’ve recently moved, got married, changed your name, or turned 18, don’t wait! Register to vote today at iwillvote.com. You cannot register and vote on the same day if you wait until Election Day, November 3rd. Spread the word so your friends and family can make their voices heard.

Vote-by-Mail ballots have gone out! If you received yours, don’t wait to return it! We recommend mailing it back at least a week before Election Day, by Oct 27. Better yet, you can deliver it in person to your County Board of Elections! You can track your ballot online using northcarolina.ballottrax.net/voter/.
