STATEMENT: On the 91st Anniversary of Social Security, Michael Whatley’s Toxic Agenda Threatens It

To mark the 91st anniversary of the Social Security Act becoming law, NCDP Chair Anderson Clayton released the following statement:

“North Carolina seniors have worked hard and paid into Social Security their whole lives but DC insider Michael Whatley and his Washington Republican allies are jeopardizing benefits to give billionaires a tax handout. Whatley helped his party pass the bill and called it a ‘huge win.’ As 1.8 million North Carolina seniors face having their benefits cut by an average of $500 dollars a month, Whatley is making their problems worse. Seniors are already struggling as prices skyrocket at the grocery store, the pharmacy, and on their utility bill – North Carolinians just can’t afford Whatley in the U.S. Senate.”

Michael Whatley’s agenda could privatize Social Security and threaten North Carolinians’ retirement benefits.

  • Whatley actively pressured Republicans to support a bill that they admitted was “a backdoor for privatizing Social Security.” Whatley called the bill a “huge win.”
  • As DOGE recklessly closed multiple Social Security offices in North Carolina, Whatley cheered it on, calling the funding cuts “vital” and fundraising off of them.
  • More than 1.8 million North Carolinians rely on Social Security and would see an average cut of $500 a month if action is not taken.
