WASHINGTON EXAMINER: “The GOP Candidate Quality Problem Has A Name: Michael Whatley”

DC insider and Big Oil lobbyist Michael Whatley has spent his life developing a toxic resume full of lobbying for Big Oil, enriching himself at the expense of working families, elevating predators, and embracing weak on crime policy.

The conservative Washington Examiner is putting Whatley’s out-of-touch resume on display:

  • WEAK ON CRIME: “As North Carolina GOP chairman, Whatley aggressively pushed for COVID-19 prisoner releases, lining up with the NAACP and the American Civil Liberties Union.”

  • BIG OIL LOBBYIST: “Lobbying disclosures show that Whatley lobbied for Exxon Mobil and General Electric […] Whatley also backed regulatory ethanol subsidies that […] are estimated to be costing each North Carolinian about $200 per year.”

  • DC INSIDER ENRICHING HIMSELF:He’s certainly ‘politician-adjacent’ and has prospered as a result. Senate disclosures show six-figure holdings in Alphabet and Microsoft, tens of thousands more in pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer and Merck, and over $130,000 in green and environmental, social, and governance-aligned funds, on top of shares in Yum China. […] His specific investment choices may serve to raise some eyebrows.”

  • CHILD SEX PREDATORS: “A raft of North Carolina Republican detractors have criticized Whatley for failing to clean house, including where one major fundraiser convicted of sex crimes involving minors was concerned, when he was the state party chairman.”
