Good News, Make Stuff Cost Less, Black Maternal Health Week

Here’s what were covering this week!👇

Good News:

Y’all, if you were looking for a sign that the tide is turning, this past Tuesday was a neon billboard. From the Midwest to the deep-red heart of the South, Democrats aren’t just competing—we’re overperforming, out-organizing, and leaving the other side scrambling for a new playbook.

Let’s celebrate:

  • Wisconsin: Judge Chris Taylor handily defeated her GOP-aligned opponent, securing a liberal Supreme Court majority through 2030. It’s a sweet victory coming just one year after Elon Musk tried—and failed—to buy a seat on that very same court.
  • Georgia: Democrat Shawn Harris just pulled off a massive overperformance in a deep-red, Trump +37 district. Cue the Republican panic mode.

As we celebrate national wins, the real magic is happening right here at home. Our local Democratic communities are more energized and connected than they’ve been in years.

Here’s the numbers:

  • Leveling Up: We’ve already completed 2,158 training shifts this year.
  • Hitting the Pavement: It’s only April, and y’all have knocked on over 120,000 doors. Both of those metrics are triple where we were at this point in 2024! Through our “Anytime Canvassing” program, folks are building real grassroots power on their own schedules, having meaningful conversations with their neighbors about the issues that actually matter.

To every volunteer who has stepped up, made a call, or knocked on a door: thank you. This is what a new south looks like. While Republicans stay fighting amongst themselves, we’ll be out doing the work. Onward.

Sarah Stevens Part III:

Let’s talk about priorities for a second, because Sarah Stevens’ are completely backwards.

Right now, the chair of the House Election Law Committee is taking plenty of heat, and she has earned every bit of it. Instead of doing the work to help North Carolinians, Stevens is leading the charge on two new bills designed to criminalize voter registration drives and suppress turnout.

These bills don’t fix any actual, documented problems. They just exist to make the ballot less accessible and to threaten good-government groups—like the League of Women Voters—who are just trying to encourage our neighbors to participate in democracy.

While Stevens is busy issuing threats to folks registering voters, she is dead silent about the dirty money sitting in her own campaign account.

She has a documented history of taking cash from convicted child sex offender Harvey West, and she’s straight-up ignoring calls to give up those dirty donations.

North Carolinians have a right to know: Why is Sarah Stevens more focused on cracking down on the access to voter registration than holding a child sex predator accountable?

The truth is, we can’t trust Sarah Stevens to keep us safe. When push comes to shove, we know exactly who she is—a politician who will always protect her powerful friends and political elites over our Constitution.

Make Stuff Cost Less:

For too many right now, the middle-class dream is starting to feel like exactly that—just a dream. Between the cost of living and the absolute chaos coming out of Washington, hardworking North Carolina families are the ones left footing the bill.

It’s time for a change, and that’s exactly why Roy Cooper is running for the U.S. Senate.

He just launched his statewide “Make Stuff Cost Less” campaign to outline exactly how he’ll continue delivering for us in D.C. While he has clear plans to tackle health care and utility bills, this week we are zeroing in on the place where we all feel the pinch the most: the grocery store checkout line.

Here’s how we get things done:

  • Stop the Tariff Chaos: Chaotic tariffs don’t punish other countries; they punish our farmers. And when farmers have to pay more, those costs get passed right down to the grocery aisles and local restaurants. Roy wants to stop the tariff tantrums and support North Carolina agriculture.
  • Block Corporate Mega-Mergers: We need more competition, not less. Roy supports strengthening enforcement to stop massive corporate mergers in food processing and retail that only serve to kill competition and jack up prices.
  • Ban Creepy Pricing Algorithms: It should be illegal for companies to use algorithms to raise the price of groceries based on a specific customer. Roy will fight to ban it.
  • End Digital Price-Fixing: He wants to make it illegal for food producers to use digital tools to collude on supply and pricing. No more behind-the-scenes corporate coordinating just to squeeze an extra dollar out of your wallet.

Roy Cooper is ready to take this fight to the Senate and put an end to the D.C. noise so we can finally make stuff cost less for everyday families.

Black Maternal Health Week:

This week, Governor Josh Stein joined Senator Natalie Murdock, the Legislative Black Caucus, and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services to recognize Black Maternal Health Week and raise awareness of ongoing disparities in maternal and infant health outcomes. Black women are nearly twice as likely as white women to die from pregnancy complications in North Carolina. We cannot accept these disparities as a fact of life, so we must take action to ensure that all mothers and their babies receive the health care they need.

Governor Stein is committed to expanding access to care for mothers and their families. Last month, Governor Stein called on the General Assembly to pass a $1.4 billion Critical Needs Budget that addresses North Carolina’s most urgent needs while lawmakers continue to work on a comprehensive state budget. The budget includes $319 million to fully fund Medicaid, which covers half of all births across North Carolina and supports OB/GYNs, midwives, pediatricians, and behavioral health professionals who provide essential care for mothers and infants.

That’s a wrap for this week’s messaging!
