Raleigh – Flashback to March 14, 2019. People were still excited about Season 8 of Game of Thrones. The Jonas Brothers’ “Sucker” topped the charts. And Senator Thom Tillis was frantically searching for a reason to explain why he was spinelessly wilting to pressure from the president and the far-right on the emergency declaration.
Speaking on the floor of the Senate, Tillis tried desperately to assure everyone that he received a promise from the White House to have “a serious discussion about changing the National Emergencies Act in a way that will have Congress speak on emergency actions in the future.”
Now, we’re on the verge of President Trump declaring a new national emergency over proposed tariffs that would put North Carolina pork producers “in cross-hairs.”
So, what happened to that promise from Tillis?
Nothing. Because it was nothing more than a shameless lie to try to paper over a “flip-flop for the ages,” one in which Tillis “caved like a sand castle at high tide” to presidential pressure and threats of a primary challenger.
Now, Senator Tillis is terrified of losing a GOP primary and openly supporting President Trump’s latest emergency declaration – declaring “the President is right” – even as other Senate Republicans signal “strong resistance to new tariffs on Mexico.” Senator Tillis even admitted the tariffs amount to a new “tax” on consumers, yet he’s rubberstamping this reckless plan all to score political points with Trump at North Carolina’s expense.
As the Charlotte Observer editorial board wrote this weekend, Tillis “has abandoned the state he represents for the president he thinks he needs.”
