Sens. Tillis and Burr Refuse to Take Action to Stop Trump Administration’s Policy Ripping Families Apart

Raleigh – The Trump administration is callously ripping families apart at our southern border, separating children from their parents and guardians who are fleeing violence in South and Central America and holding them in cages and tent cities in triple digit heat.

This is a conscious decision by the Trump administration with the complicit support of Congressional Republicans, including North Carolina Senators Tillis and Burr. White House advisor Stephen Miller took full credit this weekend, saying, “It was a simple decision by the administration to have a zero tolerance policy for illegal entry, period.”

Meanwhile, Republican former First Lady Laura Bush called it “immoral,” adding, “it breaks my heart.” In North Carolina, Franklin Graham has blasted the new policy as “disgraceful” and “terrible.”

Congress can put an end to this practice immediately yet Republican leaders, including Sens. Burr and Tillis, are content to instead stand by as more families are ripped apart.

Why are Senators Burr and Tillis refusing to act as families are ripped apart on our southern border?

A legislative solution, sponsored by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, is already gaining steam – but Senators Burr and Tillis refuse to sign on:

Washington Post: “Democrats, actively denouncing the zero-tolerance policy, have remained united against the GOP measures but are pushing a bill by Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California to immediately block family separations. No Republican has publicly supported that option.”

It’s not enough to denounce this with a simple statement. Sens. Tillis and Burr need to legislate and stop this inhumane practice all together.

Why are Senators Burr and Tillis refusing to back legislation to stop breaking up families?

“This is a national travesty, one that is immoral, inhumane, and goes against the values of our country,” NCDP Executive Director Kimberly Reynolds said.“Republicans in Washington are allowing tens of thousands of children to be ripped from their families while Senators Burr and Tillis silently allow it to happen. We need leaders who will take action to protect children, not stand idly by as they’re torn from their parents arms.”
