NCDP Statement on Lt. Gov. Forest’s Unethical, Potentially Illegal Campaign Finance Violations

Raleigh – North Carolina Democratic Party Executive Director Kimberly Reynolds released the following statement after Lt. Gov. Dan Forest’s campaign improperly and potentially illegally coordinated with a pro-Forest Republican super PAC named Truth & Prosperity. Forest’s campaign released fundraising totals for the super PAC through the campaign, and specifically noted that Forest himself raised them, saying, “Forest’s campaign … publicly released the totals he raised during the same cycle for two other entities.”

“Lt. Governor Dan Forest is not only potentially breaking election law by coordinating with a Republican super PAC, he’s boasting about it. Forest’s own claim that he directly raised money for this dark money outside super PAC raises serious ethical concerns and may even be illegal. Despite the swirling ethical questions around this shady announcement, Forest made one thing clear – he’s looking out for special interests and their unaccountable dark money, not the people of North Carolina.”
