SPECIAL MASTER! This week brought us one step closer in the fight for fair maps in North Carolina. On Thursday, a three-judge panel appointed a special master to review and likely redraw the nine districts that may still be unconstitutional or otherwise unlawful. Make no mistake, this is a colossal political failure for Berger and Moore. North Carolinian’s deserve fair maps and competitive elections.

LT. DAN COZYS UP WITH EXTREME GROUP. Lt. Governor Dan Forest cozied up with leaders of an extreme group, Word of Faith, which an AP investigation reveal routinely beat members, enslaved young people, and installed people in public office to protect the group.

And here’s some excerpts from AP

“Congregants of the Word of Faith Fellowship were regularly punched, smacked, choked, slammed to the floor or thrown through walls in a violent form of deliverance meant to “purify” sinners by beating out devils”

“’I saw so many people beaten over the years. Little kids punched in the face, called Satanists,’ said Katherine Fetachu, 27, who spent nearly 17 years in the church.”

“Those interviewed — most of them raised in the church — say Word of Faith leaders waged a decades-long cover-up to thwart investigations by law enforcement and social services officials, including strong-arming young victims and their parents to lie.”

“Several former followers said some congregants were sexually abused, including minors. On one recorded conversation, Whaley admits to being aware of the sexual assault of three boys but not reporting it to authorities.”

LT. DAN, CALL YOUR OFFICE. After the News & Observer’s report that Lt. Dan cozied up with leaders of an extreme group, he refused to condemn the group’s violent behavior. Word of Faith violently “purifies” sinners, but when asked to condemn them, Lt. Dan’s spokesperson dodged:
Forest is “concerned with the well-being of all 10 million plus citizens of our great state.”

That doesn’t cut it. Forest should immediately and unequivocally denounce Word of Faith and return any money raised.

CHIEF JUSTICE SPEAKS OUT AGAINST GOP COURT RIGGING. Chief Justice Mark Martin vehemently opposes the next step in the NC GOP’s court-rigging scheme. Earlier this month, Republicans proposed a constitutional amendment that would limit all judicial terms to two years, effectively turning judges into politicians and putting every judge in North Carolina on the ballot in 2018. Morgan correctly said the proposal would ‘disrupt the administration of justice’ by forcing constant campaigning and fundraising. As more of the judicial community speaks out against these partisan attacks on our court, it’s clear how far North Carolina Republicans are willing to go to win in court again, even at the expense of our independent judiciary.

DC REPUBLICANS CHOOSE WALL STREET OVER MAIN STREET, REVOKE CONSUMER PROTECTIONS. Late Tuesday night, Sens. Tillis and Burr chose Wall Street over vulnerable consumers by voting to gut consumer protections against large financial corporations. The GOP is opening the door for large companies like Equifax and Wells Fargo to play fast and loose with consumer’s information and trust and not have to worry about the repercussions. This is nothing new for NC Republicans – our lawmakers spent 2017 prioritizing donors at the expense of everyday people – but it is shameful how easily our legislators can be bought.

GENX EXPANDS, STATE REGULATORS NEED MORE FUNDING. It’s clear that GenX is more than a regional problem. The contaminant travels over 100 miles down the Cape Fear River before it reaches Wilmington, and last week DEQ found elevated levels of GenX in private wells. Even worse, there are concerns that GenX might be spread through the air, contaminating upstream water sources. Still, Republican legislators fail to recognize the scope of this problem – even patting themselves on the back for providing only $435,000 to Wilmington-specific researchers. It’s high time our legislators put clean drinking water before politics by giving DEQ and DHHS the funding they need to keep North Carolina’s citizens safe.

NEWEST GOP MEMBER: HOW DARE YOU POINT OUT THAT CUTTING ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORS MAKES IT HARDER TO MONITOR THE ENVIRONMENT. The first thing new GOP Rep. Bill Brisson did was slam Governor Cooper, Democrats, editorial boards, the public, and anyone with two eyes for pointing out that “Department of Environmental Quality budget cuts handed down by the General Assembly’s Republican majority in recent years made water monitoring more difficult.” Congrats on your newest recruit, NC GOP.

GOP BUDGET GUTS MEDICARE, MEDICAID TO GIVE MASSIVE TAX CUT TO WEALTHY. Republican legislators are gutting assistance for those who need it the most so they can pay for a tax plan that helps out America’s wealthiest 1%. Almost all of North Carolina’s Republican Congressional delegation voted Thursday for a budget that slashes funding for Medicare, Medicaid, and programs like SNAP. The numbers are staggering, yet D.C. Republicans continue to prioritize tax cuts for the wealthiest few over protecting the millions of North Carolinians who rely on these programs. Meanwhile, President Trump has declared the opioid crisis a national emergency just as his party takes steps to defund the programs best equipped to help.
