Raleigh – Today, the North Carolina Democratic Party filed a Public Records request with the Legislative Services Office for access to and a copy of the total number of payments and amount of money paid to Republican consultant Tom Hofeller. Redistricting committee chair Rep. Lewis, Speaker Moore, and President Pro Tem Berger also received copies of the letter. Read a full copy of the request online here.
Hofeller is the dark arts gerrymandering expert and “chief architect” of the current legislative and congressional maps found unconstitutional by unanimous U.S. Supreme Court decision. The General Assembly previously paid Hofeller $50,163 for his services during the 2011 redistricting session. Republicans have thus far refused to disclose how much they are paying Hofeller to subvert our democracy and draw more hyper-partisan maps that put Republicans’ political interests ahead of the interests of our state.
At a hearing Wednesday, Rep. Lewis confirmed that while the General Assembly will contract Hofeller, Democrats will not have access to his work or services as the maps are created. And yesterday, judges on the federal panel overseeing a redraw of North Carolina’s legislative maps reprimanded Republicans for dragging their feet on redistricting. “You don’t seem serious,” U.S. District Judge Catherine Eagles said. “What’s our assurance that you are serious about remedying this?”
“The people of North Carolina deserve to know how much the unconstitutionally elected Republican caucus is spending on the exact same person that got us into this mess in the first place,” NCDP Executive Director Kimberly Reynolds said. “Republicans are thumbing their nose at our electoral system and should not force taxpayers to foot the bill for a man who subverts democracy at every turn.”
