Raleigh – According to reporting this weekend from the Greenville Daily Reflector, Senator Tillis – after lying about Senate Leader Mitch McConnell’s obstructionism on commonsense gun safety reforms – also joined a wide array of Democrats in appearing to give his full-throated endorsement of a public health insurance option.
Desperate to run from his past votes to gut protections for people with pre-existing conditions and to make Medicaid expansion illegal, Senator Tillis told the Daily Reflector:
“I do believe that government has to provide an option for people in the middle ground who don’t have a job health care plan but don’t qualify for Medicaid, Medicare,” Tillis said.
That position contradicts Senator Tillis’ long record pushing to repeal the health care law and his comments from just earlier this summer defending his disastrous health care record:
- When the Senate debated repealing the health care law, Senator Tillis said that he’d vote for “outright repeal” of the ACA “every time it comes to the floor” and later called the vote “courageous.”
- In June, Senator Tillis bragged, “I am the Speaker of the House who signed the bill that made it illegal to expand Medicaid under Obamacare.”
- In July, Senator Tillis confirmed his support for a Republican-led lawsuit to upend the health care law, saying, “I support anything that ultimately takes [the ACA] off the table…”
Tillis is so desperate to distract from his disastrous record of voting to gut protections for people with pre-existing conditions, he just stumbled into a new policy position that a majority of Democrats running for president also support.
It’s the same sort of distraction his hometown paper warned about at the start of this cycle, telling voters, “Tillis should own who he is, and North Carolinians should recognize what he isn’t.”
