First In The Nation, Insurance Hikes, For The People

Here’s what were covering this week!👇

Another Insurance Hike:

As if cost of living increases aren’t enough, North Carolina homeowners are facing a pressing home insurance crisis exacerbated by rising costs, claim denials and policy non-renewals. We’re bracing for a 7.5% rate increase in homeowner insurance rates on June 1st, which is why we are calling out Republican Representatives Chuck Edwards and Greg Murphy who have repeatedly voted against disaster preparedness and climate action while accepting nearly $100,000 from the property insurance and oil and gas industries — even as North Carolina homeowners suffer. A new report from Unlocking America’s Future exposes how North Carolina’s Republican members of Congress have failed to take action on the worsening home insurance crisis devastating their own constituents.

First In The Nation:

The road to the White House runs through North Carolina.

North Carolina is one of the most competitive, diverse, and politically consequential states in America, and any candidate who can win here will have proven they can build the coalition needed to win the White House. For too long, presidential primaries have centered states that do not fully reflect the demographic, geographic, and political realities of the modern Democratic coalition. North Carolina does.

If Democrats want to build a durable governing majority, we must compete and organize in the South. North Carolina is where that future is already taking shape. North Carolina Democrats have spent years building the organizing infrastructure, grassroots energy, and voter coalition needed to lead.

Trump Being Trump:

It’s becoming increasingly clear that Trump and Republican policies have severely damaged our economy and forced many Americans to forgo their healthcare. A staggering two-thirds of the population believe the country is heading in the wrong direction, and a striking 70% disapprove of Trump’s handling of the economy—an increase of over 20 points from his first term.

Consumer sentiment has plummeted to the lowest point ever recorded for the second consecutive month. Prices are soaring, and jobs are disappearing, with consumer and business costs rising at the highest rate in three years, all while wages stagnate. This affordability crisis is hitting families hard.

Moreover, Trump’s reckless decisions, including his war with Iran, have driven average gas prices up to $4.49 per gallon. This spike has a domino effect, inflating the costs of groceries, transportation, utilities, and everyday goods. As a result, many Americans are depleting their savings and turning to loans and credit cards to manage their expenses, pushing consumer borrowing to its highest level since 2022.

For The People:

Governor Roy Cooper expressed his firm support for a ban on elected officials turning into lobbyists once they leave office. And it’s about dang time we stand up against this practice! We deserve public servants who prioritize the interests of North Carolinians rather than their own financial gain. Which proves just how big of a stark contrast Roy Cooper is with Michael Whatley, who has used his experience in government to profit personally by advocating for companies such as Duke Energy, which have increased costs for families and lined his pockets.

Roy Cooper released the following statement in support of a ban on elected officials becoming lobbyists after they have left office:

“Elected officials should focus on lowering costs and delivering for the people they represent, not gaming how they will cash out on their connections when they leave office. To me, this is simple: elected officials and high-ranking executive branch staff shouldn’t lobby after they leave office. In the U.S. Senate, I’ll be laser-focused on making stuff cost less and making life easier for North Carolina families. I won’t lobby after leaving office.”

That’s a wrap for this week’s messaging!
