Gov. Easley Signs Law to Increase Punishment of Sexual Offenders
New Law Will Help Protect State's Children
Gov. Mike Easley today signed into law House Bill 1896, "An act to amend the sex offender and public protection registration programs." The bill was sponsored by Reps. Bruce Goforth (D-Buncombe), Jean Farmer-Butterfield (D-Wilson), Rick Glazier (D-Cumberland) and Karen Ray (R-Iredell). In the Senate, the bill was carried by Sens. John Snow (D-Cherokee), Pete Bland (D-Craven), Tony Rand (D-Cumberland) and Dan Clodfelter (D-Mecklenburg).
"For more than 25 years, as a prosecutor, attorney general and now as governor, I have worked to ensure the safety and security of the state's most vulnerable citizens, especially our children," said Easley. "This legislation ensures that North Carolina has among the toughest laws in the country and gives us new tools to protect our communities from sex offenders and child predators.
