NCDP Statement on the Appointment of Dana Lightfoot

Anti-Pre-k ‘Policy Executive’ will lead Division of Child Development and Early Education

In response to Secretary Aldona Wos’ appointment of Dana Lightfoot lead the DCDEE, Clay Pittman, spokesman for the North Carolina Democratic party issued the following response:

“North Carolina was a pioneer in early childhood education.  Our development of Smart Start and More at Four set a benchmark for the rest of the country, raising the standard for what we can do to give children every opportunity to succeed in their schooling and in life.  Early childhood education leads to fewer dropouts, higher school enrollment, improved cognitive development, and improved nutrition and health. (Link)   It provides an opportunity to level the playing field, so that a child’s socio-economic status doesn’t stand in the way of a great education.    That’s what makes the appointment of Diana Lightfoot so troubling.  For Governor McCrory, who stated his support for Pre-K during the campaign, and Secretary Wos to appoint someone who actively advocates against Pre-K, who believes that educating our children will result in “an entitlement mentality,” demonstrates a total lack of respect for the educational process and a willingness to sacrifice North Carolina’s future a political goal.”
