Five Romney Ghosts Revisited on Halloween
Raleigh, NC— While the Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney has famously held various positions on the same issue, he has tried to leave a few issues in the past. With today marking the frightful holiday of Halloween, we are revisiting a few ghosts from Mitt Romney’s past.
Ghost #1: Let Detroit Go Bankrupt
When the financial crisis had brought GM and Chrysler to their knees, the President faced a clear choice: he could authorize a rescue plan that gave automakers a chance to recover and save American jobs, or he could follow Mitt Romney’s advice and “let Detroit go bankrupt.” President Obama chose the right path, and the U.S. auto industry saved thousands of jobs. But that didn’t stop Mitt Romney from trying to take credit for the President’s swift action. The ghosts of op-eds past continue to trail him. (New York Times, 11/18/08, Forbes, 5/08/12)
Ghost #2: RomneyCare
Mitt Romney has pledged to repeal ObamaCare and often criticizes the President’s health care reform. But, what he doesn’t talk about his own stab at health reform, RomneyCare, which he implemented in Massachusetts and was the road map for ObamaCare. (LA Times, 6/28/12)
Ghost #3: Offshore Accounts & Tax Returns
Mitt Romney certainly doesn’t want to revisit the ghosts of tax returns and offshore accounts of the past. Despite the pressure on Romney to release his tax returns this summer, he remained sturdy in his determination to not discuss his offshore accounts and to not follow decades of precedent and release multiple years of returns. (Talking Points Memo, 7/8/12)
Ghost #4: His Record of Bankruptcy, Outsourcing & Pink Slips at Bain Capital
The American public has heard a lot about the Cliff Notes version of Mitt Romney’s time at Bain Capital from him and his campaign. But, what you won’t hear from them is his record of bankrupting companies, outsourcing jobs and handing out pink slips that continue to haunt the Republican nominee. (News & Observer, 8/26/12)
Ghost #5: Seamus, The Romney Family Dog
Mitt Romney can’t shake his decision to strap the family dog, Seamus, to the roof of the family car and travel hours to their vacation destination despite the dog being sick and terrified from the experience. As Chris Cillizza from Washington Post points out, this uncaring act continues to dog Mitt Romney. (Washington Post, 3/15/12)
