Gov. Perdue is Abuzz About Bees

RALEIGH, N.C. -- North Carolina's governor is donning protective gear and collecting honey from bees living on the grounds of the state's Executive Mansion.

Perdue set aside time on Tuesday to empty about 60 pounds of honey from two hives installed on the Raleigh landmark this spring.

Perdue spokeswoman Chrissy Pearson says the governor has taken an interest since the head groundskeeper started experimenting with bees a couple of months ago.

The honey bee is North Carolina's official state insect. It's responsible for producing millions of dollars worth of honey. But its greatest value is its role in agriculture by carrying pollen to crops.

Pearson says the mansion's groundskeeper has found dozens of apples on the trees instead of the usual handful at this time of year.
