The people of North Carolina deserve open and honest government and they expect law enforcement and prosecutors to root out the wrongdoers. Stronger investigative tools, clear disclosure and tough penalties for deceit will keep the public's business in the open and make it less likely to be a target of improper influence and corruption.
Accusations of official wrong-doing can be challenging to uncover. In just the past five years, the prosecutors and SBI agents in my office have investigated more than 350 public corruption cases involving all manner of public officials, including a Council of state member, legislators, judges, district attorneys, law enforcement, county commissioners, city council members and more.
We've had many successes, but we've also learned that giving investigators the strongest possible tools to uncover the truth assures everyone that public corruption will be rooted out and prosecuted. That's why I'm calling on the North Carolina General Assembly to enact reform legislation. You can view the entire details of my proposal at www.ncdoj.com.
Decisions made in the open are better decisions for all of the people of North Carolina. Stopping public corruption and restoring confidence in government demands more disclosure, and means uncovering and prosecuting crimes.
Sincerely,
Roy Cooper
