Today, North Carolina Representatives Patrick McHenry, Virginia Foxx and Howard Coble opposed strengthening the highly successful Head Start program, which gives almost 20,000 disadvantaged children in North Carolina a better chance to succeed in school.
The bill passed with strong bipartisan support, with only 32 members opposing the measure and 381 Republicans and Democrats supporting it.
“Our children are our state’s most important resource, and we should invest in their future by offering them the best early education possible,” said NCDP Chair Jerry Meek.
“But today, Republicans tried to make it harder for every child in North Carolina to get a better education, voting against the Head Start program which improves teacher quality and helps raise kids’ achievement in school,” Meek said.
Reps. McHenry, Foxx and Coble opposed the Improving Head Start for School Readiness Act Conference Report (HR 1429).
The legislation puts a larger focus on teacher quality, dedicating 30 percent of the funding to go to raising teachers’ salaries and professional development initiatives. Since 1965, Head Start has been one of the most successful and longest-running school readiness programs in America.

McHenry, Foxx, and Coble
McHenry, Foxx, and Coble clearly do not understand the value of a strong educational background. Or, maybe they are out of touch with the needs of regular-everyday folks. It is time we elected men and women who believe and fight to give every American an opportunity to excel.
DO YOU REALLY KNOW ANYTHING
DO YOU REALLY KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE PROGRAM WHICH YOU TOUT? JUST TO SAY THAT A PERSON DOES NOT UNDERSTAND THE VALUE A STRONG EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND BECAUSE THEY DO NOT SUPPORT GIVING MORE MONEY TO OR EXPANDING A PROGRAM IS DEFINITELY AN OPINION. DO YOU KNOW WHY THEY VOTED AS THEY DID? OR DO YOU JUST ASSUME THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT EDUCATION OF CHILDREN BECAUSE THEY ARE REPUBLICANS? IF YOU COMMENT, PLEASE HAVE FACTS TO SUPPORT YOUR OPINIONS. HEAD START IS A PROGRAM THAT HAS BEEN AROUND FOR A LONG TIME. IT MAY NEED SOME RESTRUCTURING AND IT MAY NEED TO BE RE-EVALUATED BY EDUCATED CITIZENS WHO DO NOT HAVE ANY PERSONAL INTERESTS IN THE PROGRAM. I AM FAIRLY SURE I WILL NOT SEE THIS REPLY ON THIS WEBSITE. SINCERELY, MARGARET
