Raleigh – Today, State Superintendent June Atkinson announced that she will seek re-election.  The positive work of increasing the North Carolina high school graduation rate remains her first priority.  Since she became superintendent, the graduation rate has increased 10 points, from 68 percent to an all time high of 78 percent just this past school year.  She wants to continue the progress toward remodeling public education so that all children, regardless of where they live in North Carolina, will have a personalized education that will give them many options once they graduate from high school.

Dr. Atkinson says, “With the help and support of local school leaders, boards of education, teachers, parents, students, and elected officials, I will continue to work on behalf of the 1.5 million students to ensure their success.  I want to finish some major initiatives that we have underway to remodel public education and make it stronger than ever before.”
