NCDP Chairman Calls on Mitt Romney to Release Comprehensive Tax Returns
What is Romney Worried About?
Raleigh, NC – Following today’s New York Times editorial calling on Romney to release his tax returns – a practice that every Republican and Democratic nominee for president has adhered to for a generation but which Romney has repeatedly refused to do – North Carolina Democratic Party Chair David Parker released the following statement:
“It’s time for Mitt Romney to follow the precedent from previous presidential candidates, including his father, and release his previous comprehensive federal income tax returns for the past eight years. During last night’s Republican presidential debate, Mitt Romney found yet another opportunity to say anything to get elected – telling voters he’d ‘probably’ agree to release his tax returns in April even though he has refused to do so for as long as anyone can remember, including just last month. It’s possible he has been trying to avoid having voters find out what he reluctantly admitted today – that he has paid ‘closer to the 15 percent’ tax rate, a far lower rate than what is paid by the typical working family. If Mitt Romney is unfairly taking advantage of the tax system or entangled in any other potential conflicts of interest, the American people have a right to know about it. After mounting public pressure for Mitt Romney to follow a precedent set by previous presidential candidates from both parties – including Romney’s own father when he ran for president in 1968 – we still haven’t gotten a straight answer from Romney on if he’ll release his tax returns. Why is Mitt Romney trying to play by a different set of rules? It’s time for Romney to come clean with hardworking folks here in North Carolina and agree to hold himself to the same standard that his father and every Republican and Democratic presidential nominee have set for decades.”
