Hagan Congratulates Nominees for US Service Academies

WASHINGTON, D.C.  – U.S. Senator Kay R. Hagan (NC) today named the 50 North Carolina students who received her nomination to attend a U.S. Service Academy in 2012. Receiving a nomination from a member of Congress is a significant accomplishment and an important step in the service academies’ highly competitive application process.

“Congratulations to these incredible North Carolina students,” Hagan said. “I am impressed each year by the exceptional individuals that apply to my office. These 50 nominees have already established a long list of accomplishments in academics, athletics and service, and have shown remarkable character and leadership skills. North Carolina has a strong military tradition and I am so proud of all of the young men and women who want to serve our country while seeking a world-class academy education.”

Each year, Hagan hosts Academy Day for middle and high school students interested in applying to a U.S. Service Academy. The event provides an opportunity for students to meet with cadets and midshipmen from the service academies and learn more about the nomination process through Hagan's office. Representatives from all five academies – the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, U.S. Military Academy, and U.S. Naval Academy – attend the event. Hagan, who serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee, comes from a strong military family. Her father-in-law was a two-star Marine General; her brother and father served in the Navy; her husband, Chip, is a Vietnam veteran who used the GI Bill to help pay for law school; and she has two nephews who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
