Raleigh – Gov. Bev Perdue today announced that North Carolina has received $115 million in five federal recovery grants to extend broadband connectivity in North Carolina. These funds will create jobs and help spur economic development through expanded access to high-speed Internet in underserved areas. Gov. Bev Perdue this week signed four bills that aid North Carolinians serving on active duty in the military and their families. She signed the bills Wednesday at the Morrisville base for the 130th Air Reconnaissance Battalion of the N.C. National Guard with National Guard troops and family members of fallen soldiers present. North Carolina's governor is donning protective gear and collecting honey from bees living on the grounds of the state's Executive Mansion. Perdue set aside time on Tuesday to empty about 60 pounds of honey from two hives installed on the Raleigh landmark this spring. Perdue spokeswoman Chrissy Pearson says the governor has taken an interest since the head groundskeeper started experimenting with bees a couple of months ago.

Yesterday, SurveyUSA released a poll conducted exclusively for WRAL News in which Sen. Richard Burr was viewed favorably by just 32 percent of registered voters. The poll is the third public poll this month to record a favorability or job approval rating at or below 35% for the incumbent. Fifty percent favorability is generally considered safe territory for incumbents. Read More »

North Carolina will receive $159 million as part of a federal aid package designed to fight foreclosures in states plagued by high unemployment.
The $600 million package announced Monday by the Obama administration is the latest sign that the nation's foreclosure problem has spread from subprime borrowers to the growing number of people who can't find work.

The North Carolina Democratic Party is calling on Senator Richard Burr to denounce efforts by a Republican colleague to halt federal payments to North Carolina for construction projects totaling nearly $20 million. Because of political maneuvering by Senator Jim Bunning (R-KY), the U.S. Department of Transportation announced today that at least three North Carolina transportation projects have been temporarily suspended: the Newfound Gap road rehabilitation, the Blue Ridge Parkway road resurfacing, and the Goshen Creek Bridge replacement, all located in western North Carolina. Federal inspectors will be removed from these sites until Congress acts to fix the problem, causing North Carolina workers to be furloughed. Read More »
