While Governor Romney spent virtually no time campaigning in the Tar Heel State before the primary, his views and positions on important issues to North Carolinians are already familiar to us. Instead of moving our state forward by investing in a North Carolina for the next century, Romney has embraced the extreme Ryan budget, which drastically cuts education, research, worker training, and infrastructure – all to pay for more budget-busting tax cuts for the wealthy. Instead of fighting to make education more affordable for all, Romney would make the Department of Education “a heck of a lot smaller” and leave college students on their own to “shop around.”

This week, the U.S. Senate will vote on a plan to prevent the interest rate on new subsidized student loans from doubling—on the same day outstanding student loan debt in our country will hit $1 trillion. But the outcome is far from clear. President Obama is urging Americans everywhere to tell Congress to act—including students in North Carolina where average student loan debt is approximately $20,959.
