where’s the beef?
There’s a famous Wendy’s commercial with the tagline of “Where’s the Beef.”
I was asking myself that very question today after the Republican leadership in the state legislature led by Senate Minority Leader Phil Berger and House Minority Leader Skip Stam held a press conference to discuss their proposed budget for the State of North Carolina.
You see, the Republican leadership had their talking points, and they had their microphones at the press conference. What they didn’t have were any specifics.
According to the Raleigh News and Observer, when reporters pressed House Minority Leader Skip Stam for specifics about how they would balance the state’s budget, Stam said, “I feel certain we will provide specific cuts in the future.”
No specifics? This was a press conference they called to unveil their budget ideas for the upcoming year. If they didn’t have any specific ideas to offer, why did they even call the press conference in the first place?
Where’s the beef?
North Carolina Republicans have gotten very good at calling press conferences and throwing stones, but when it comes time to offer actual solutions to move the state forward, they draw a blank.
For the past 18 months Governor Perdue and Democrats in the legislature have worked to steer North Carolina through the global economic recession brought on by the disastrous economic policies of George W. Bush.
Democrats have kept our state’s AAA bond rating and kept our state’s tax burden low, while Republicans in North Carolina have sat back and failed to offer any real solutions. Today’s proposal by Berger and Stam shows we can expect more of the same throughout this legislative session.
