Recovery Act Funds aid Energy Efficiency and Promote Green Job Growth
About $5.4 million in Energy Efficiency & Conservation Block Grants Assist Public Schools and Community Colleges

Gov. Bev Perdue today announced that an additional $5.4 million in federal Recovery Act funding for energy efficiency block grants has been awarded to help 38 public school systems and community colleges save on utility and fuel bills and create jobs. Additional grants are expected to be announced in the coming weeks as funding applications are reviewed and acted upon.
“Green energy is one of my top priorities, said Gov. Bev Perdue. “These federal recovery funds will help put people to work, help our schools and reduce cost for communities throughout the state.”
The grants program is administered by the North Carolina Energy Office, part of the state’s Department of Commerce, to encourage energy conservation and economic investment in counties, municipalities, community colleges and public schools. A total of $7.2 million is available to local government agencies and $6.3 million to public schools and community colleges.
The grants have been awarded as follows:
• Asheville-Buncombe Community College -- $135,414 for lighting improvements and lighting controls in seven buildings. Total cost of the project is $224,976.
• Asheville City Schools -- $200,000 for lighting retrofits and room occupancy sensors in 10 schools. Total cost of the project is $366,341.
• Asheboro City Schools -- $200,000 for lighting improvements, occupancy sensors and lighting controls. Total cost of the project is $309,541.
• Bladen Community College -- $200,000 for heating and lighting improvements. Total cost of the project is $228,079.
• Bladen County Schools -- $197,230 to replace 40 room air conditioning units with more efficient heat pumps; eliminate hot-water heating radiators and integrate new heat pumps into existing heating and air conditioning management systems. Total cost of the project is $201,830.
• Brunswick County Schools -- $48,300 to install occupancy lighting sensors and upgrade lighting at South Brunswick Middle School, Belville Elementary School Lincoln Elementary School, Leland Middle School, South Brunswick High School and North Brunswick High School. Total cost of the project $76,750.
• Burke County Schools -- $200,000 for seven projects at 26 schools; repair and replace steam traps, new lighting controls, improve heating and air conditioning systems, replace water heating systems, improve lighting systems and install insulated windows. Total cost of the project is $407,240.
• Central Carolina Community College -- $200,000 for lighting retrofits and heating and air conditioning system upgrades. Total cost of the project is $222,462.
• Central Piedmont Community College -- $200,000 to repair and upgrade the central energy plant for the downtown Charlotte campus and improve lighting. Total cost of the project is $210,630.
• Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools -- $200,000 for lighting retrofits to more energy efficient lighting in 16 school facilities. Total cost of the project is $400,000.
• Cumberland County Schools -- $200,000 for lighting retrofits to more efficient lighting in 11 schools. Total cost of the project is $486,583
• Durham Technical Community College -- $198,800 to improve lighting and install room occupancy sensors in 12 buildings. Total cost of the project is $283,499.
• Edenton-Chowan Schools -- $200,000 to improve lighting, install insulated windows and improve heating and air conditioning systems. Total cost of the project is $318,641.
• Edgecombe County Schools -- $105,524 to replace lighting in gyms and multi-purpose areas and provide for more efficient lighting and lighting fixtures at the Southwest Edgecombe High School baseball field. Total cost of the project is $173,724.
• Forsyth Technical Community College -- $115,974 to improve heating and air conditioning systems. Total cost of the project is $174,557.
• Gaston County Schools -- $169,200 to upgrade heating and air conditioning systems and add system controls for Stanley Middle School and North Gaston High School. Total cost of the project is $369,200.
• Graham County Schools -- $199,380 to improve lighting, install occupancy sensors in bathrooms and hallways and upgrade heating and air conditioning system controls. Total cost of the project is $265,304.
• Harnett County Schools -- $32,968 to upgrade heating and air conditioning systems to demand control ventilation. Total cost of the project is $40,742.
• Hertford County Schools -- $80,500 for lighting upgrades in high schools and heating and air conditioning system improvements. Total cost of the project is $83,500.
• Johnston County Community College -- $191,156 for efficiency lighting improvements, climate control improvements in four buildings. Total cost of the project is $216,402.
• Mayland Community College -- $41,412 to improve lighting and exit signs along with installing occupancy sensors. Total cost of the project is $69,972.
• Mitchell Community College -- $44,000 to upgrade heating and air conditioning controls in two buildings. Total cost of the project is $84,000.
• Montgomery Community College -- $169,432 for heating and air conditioning improvements, lighting upgrades and vending machine energy controls. Total cost of the project is $210,759.
• Mount Airy Schools -- $49,835 for web-enabled building automation systems at Mount Airy Middle School. Total cost of the project is $55,335.
• Nash-Rocky Mount Schools -- $198,235 for lighting efficiency improvements and room occupancy sensors. Total cost of the project is $240,662.
• Pender County Schools -- $51,300 for wireless room occupancy sensors and dual voltage switches district wide. Total cost of the project is $76,750.
• Piedmont Community College -- $130,766 for lighting improvements on the Person and Caswell campuses. Total cost of the project is $185,258.
• Randolph Community College -- $154,410 for lighting improvements and installing room occupancy sensors. Total cost of the project is $162,210.
• Randolph County Schools -- $41,092 for lighting improvements and installation of room occupancy sensors in six school gyms and other classrooms. Total cost of the project is $50,031.
• Richmond County Schools -- $200,000 for lighting improvements and to replace a chiller. Total cost of the project is $240,245.
• Rowan-Cabarrus Community College -- $177,521 for lighting improvements, occupancy sensors and heating and air conditioning system upgrades. Total cost of the project is $194,546.
• Rutherford County Schools -- $44,380 for lighting improvements, installing room occupancy sensors, heating and air conditioning improvements, solar-assisted hot-water heating and other improvements. Total cost of the project is $81,049.
• Scotland County Schools -- $172,331 for lighting efficiency improvements and room occupancy sensors. Total cost of the project is $221,307.
• Swain County Schools -- $73,432 to improve lighting. Total cost of the project is $83,422.
• Tri-County Community College -- $115,360 for lighting efficiency improvements in Cherokee, Graham and main campus facilities. Total cost of the project is $128,680.
• Vance County Schools -- $200,000 to improve lighting and replace heating and air conditioning units at Southern Vance High School, replace heating; improve lighting and the boiler at Northern Vance High School and improve lighting at the maintenance and transportation building. Total cost of the project is $232,036.
• Wake Technical Community College -- $121,971 to upgrade lighting, install room occupancy and other lighting sensors and other improvements to three buildings. Total cost of the project is $171,971.
• Western Piedmont Community College -- $121,890 for repair and improvements to the heating and air conditioning systems. Total cost of the project $137,297.
