TWO YOUTH FEATURES THIS WEEK!

ROWAN COUNTY

On December 11th the Rowan County Democratic Party held their annual holiday party at Rowan Helping Ministries in Salisbury. Democrats served refreshments and handed out warm clothing, scarves, toothbrushes, toys, and toiletry items collected by the Party.

Teen Dems Chair Emma Leibowitz led the toy drive.  Senior Democrats collected children's items. County Chair Veleria Levy reports that when a guest was looking for a jacket and none were left, Ruby Walker took the jacket off her back and gave it to him.

Sharone Belt (last picture), owner of Jubilee Balloons donated her time to make holiday themed balloon animals.  Guest left with bags of chocolate, toiletries, socks, hats and gloves - and smiles.

FEATURED YOUTH

TIA MEREDITH - RANDOLPH COUNTY

For the last two years, one of the most beautiful people at the State Democratic Party's Holidazzle Party has been Tia Meredith of Randolph County.

Tia is the nine year old daughter of Randolph County Democratic Party Chair Jim Meredith and his wife, Beverly.  She is in the fourth grade at Liberty Elementary School.

She likes going to the State Zoo which is located in her home county.  She loves animals so much that she wants to be a veterinarian and wants to volunteer with the ASPCA when she is old enough.

Tia enjoys drawing and reading, mostly non-fiction.

She is already a good Democrat, having canvassed with her Dad and she frequently attends Randolph County Democratic Party events.  The last picture show Tia with her 20 year old sister, Suzanne, who is also a strong Democrat.

ALEX AND DREW COGNAC - UNION COUNTY

Motorsports and team sports are the hallmarks of this pair of young men from Union County, Alex and Drew Cognac of Marvin. They are the sons of Mike Cognac, the former Democratic Mayor of Marvin.  They attend Marvin Ridge Middle School where Alex is in the eighth grade and Drew is in the sixth grade.

Drew is shown in the pictures on the top row playing baseball. The highlight of his baseball career so far was helping his team win the North Carolina District 3 Championship in 2011.  He is also an outstanding basketball player.

Alex is shown in the second row.  He is a budding race car driver, racing in sprint karts that travel at speeds up to 75 mph.  The picture on the right shows Alex when he accompanied his dad, Mike Cognac, to Raleigh to cast the Ninth Congressional District's Electoral Vote for President Barack Obama in 2008. Mike was elected Secretary of North Carolina's Electoral College on that occasion.

In the last row the boys are shown with their parents, Kris and Mike Cognac. Both of these young men enjoy discussing currents events and are quick to debate their Republican friends, reminding them that we're all in this together.
