NCDP Response to John Edwards Dropping Out of the Presidential Race

NCDP Chair Jerry Meek made the following statement today in response to the news that Senator John Edwards has dropped out of the Democratic presidential primary:

"John Edwards ran an honorable campaign, one that all North Carolinians can be proud of. Senator Edwards is a fiery champion for the middle class and shifted public debate to real and serious questions facing American families such as how we’re going to educate our children and pay for health care when illness strikes.

We admire his sincere dedication to public service and enriching the lives of those whose voices are often forgotten in horse-race politics. We wish Senator Edwards and his family well."

John Edwards

Is there any possibility that John Edwards would run for the Senate against Libby Dole?

John Edwards

It is my understanding that Senator Edwards suspended his campaign. Every registered North Carolina voter should have an opportunity to vote for Senator Edwards and not allow the media to predict our next President. Our current system allows for other States to indicate our choices for us before we get the opportunity to do so. John Edwards name should remain on the ballot, not only in North Carolina, but on all ballors across the country.

I fully agree with the

I fully agree with the previous statements. Edwards supporters should have a chance to vote for him.

John Edwards

I thought we lived in a Democracy and could vote for whomever we choose! John Edwards has many many supporters who have not settled on the other two. Do not take his name off the ballot and deny his supporters the opportunity to vote for him. To remove his name is a truly un-democratic thing to do.

NC Ballot

Well if you feel that way Mr Meeks, perhaps you should leave Mr Edwards name on the NC Ballot for nothing other than respect for him and for his NC supporters.

He paid his registration fee to be on that ballot and he did not withdraw, he suspended his campaign. He still recieves delegates and he still recieves campaign matching funds. Therefore he is an active candidate.

As a North Carolina citizen, and a John Edwards supporter, I am asking you to have his name on the ballot in May.
